The chief instructor of Kita Kaze is Rob Ingram. Rob began his karate training in 1973 under Masami Tsuruoka at Scarborough College, University of Toronto. Tsuruoka Sensei was then a Chito Ryu practitioner. After two years with the Scarborough College club, Rob went to graduate school in Ottawa and then off to seek his fortune in Edmonton where he trained informally with White Crane Wu Shu practioners. In 1979, he moved to the Yukon and began training with the Whitehorse Shorin Ryu club. That organization folded after two years and a Tsuruoka club (now Shotokan) opened under nidan Len Schuffels. A year later, the Yukon Karate Association was formed. Rob became its first secretary. In 1985, he achieved shodan and became president of the YKA, a position he has held ever since. In 1986, Rob traveled to New Zealand and Australia. He was fortunate enough to train with the great Frank Nowak’s club in Sydney and with Mark Willis, current chief instructor of JKA New Zealand.
In 1992, one year after achieving sandan, Rob started his own club, Kita Kaze (North Wind). The year following that, Kita Kaze became part of the fledgling CSKA. In 1994, Rob was invited to sit on the Technical Committee of the CSKA and became national president of the organization. He was president of ShotoCanada until 2007.
